  • We have: reviewed your letters dated August 3, 1978 and February 2, 1979,
  • on posf tfve df splacemerit charging pump vibrations.

1 The Palisades plant has added accumulator type pulsation dampeners on

  • .each charging pump discharge side during.the period 1970-1972 to replace the original unsatisfactory mechanical dampeners.

As a resul_t of this

!110diffcatfon, system vibrations were reduced to ~cceptable level.

Field measurement made on August: 3,.1972 indfcat.ed the maximum peak to.

peak*vibratfori in the system.. was reduced to less than 3 mils.

In one.

specific *1ocation, the -max~mum peak t~ peak Vibration w.as reduced from 43 lllils to 0.3 mils.

No c;racks were -experienced sfnce.tha.t period.

'f" Based on,these measurements and perfonnance history, we concluded that peak alternating stresse~*fn the charging system piping is below the

  • endurance 1 fmi t-and therefore, fatigue_ failure due*.to operation of po,sitive disp*lacement chargi_n_g pumps ar~ no_t anticipated..
