. I pqismic,testing was performed on three." (3.) samples of a High:voltage shutdown Relay (HvsR) [4] as identified in section 2.0 in ZEEE 344-1987 fl] and IREE, C37.98-87 f2] methodologies. 'The accordanceth first tcjo relays were identified as "bad" and the third as "good" based on the operation of the latching/reset mechanism. The relay test specimens ard seismic equired response spectra (RRS) were provided to HLX by C&D [3] The testing was per ormed at HI I's Fort North, Texas fjcklity.
Peiomic testing was performed with each relay PC board mounted" to a 'rigid vertical table fixture using four 44) 56-32 (UNC) steel .
.machine screws with standoffs using tl'e PC board holes. Tes ing-'
waIs performed with the relays de-energ'ized and unlatched, eiiergized, and de-energized and.latched. The normally open (NO) aqd normally closed (NC) contacts were monitored for contact chatter exceeding 2 milli-seconds.
There. was no visible evidence of physical damage to the relays 'or,.
mounting hardware at the conclusion to the seismic test. The eg'ood" 'relay maintained state and did not exhibit any ccntact hach'anged exceeding 2 milli-seconds during: the seismic testing. The c)Iatter dirst "bad" re1ay's NO contact changed state (closed) ir. the de-ene, gibed and un'atched state, and.the .reset button moved approximately halfway out. The second "bad" relay's NC contact state (opened) in the de-energized and unlatched state during. the 8 Hz sinewave dwell test. Both "bad" relays'ontacts state and did not chatter with the relay coil en'ergized. The latch on t'e first "bad" re1ay was observed to be
'aintained faulty, and would not retain the contacts in the Latched position. These anomalies are documented in Appendix C.
'7he test response spectra for all of the test runs are shown:in Ajpendix A. The first test series consists of a broad band random rqu1tifrequency spectrum based on'he guidelines of IEEE C37.98 (2];..
The sec'ond test series consists of'6 Hz and .8 Hz corstant sine upon the resonant frequencies of the c&D ARR130K300 and dwel'e'sts'ased ARR130K400 series battery chargers in which the HVSR is insta11ed f3];
8'ased'n. the results of this test p ogram it is concluded that I
thjs HVSR is seismically rugged. provided that the latching mechanism is in good working orde'r.
