Cpp Re:

Nine Mile Point Unit 1

Docket No. 50-220 DPR-63 Gentlemen:

On March 20,

1982, Niagara Mohawk took Nine Mile Point Unit 1 off the line to repair unidentified leakage in the drywell.

This leakage was from reactor building closed loop cooling to the recirculation pump coolers.

Upon completion of this repair work, normal test and inspections were conducted prior to restarting the unit.

During a hydro test on March 23, 1982, water droplets were discovered on the outside of two recirculation nozzle safe ends.

Subsequent to this testing, ultrasonic examinations on both safe ends were performed and yielded numerous indications.

In addition, ultrasonic examination of another safe end was performed which resulted in another indication.

Niagara Mohawk has currently put into motion its contingency program which was developed in 1979 for replacement of these safe ends.

We anticipate that the unit will be shutdown for approximately one year to make these replacements.

A schedule is attached.

This information has been relayed to yourself and various members of your staff since discovery.

Niagara Mohawk will keep you informed as further developments take pl ace.

Very truly yours, NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION MGM:ja Attachment Donald P. Disc Vice President
