Dear Mr. Ippolito:
On July 26,
- 1979, Amendment No. 33 to Facility Operating License No.
DPR-63 for the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No.
1 was issued.
The attached Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report detailed modifications required to the Fire Protection System.
Niagara Mohawk requests approval to modify one of these modifications.
Section 5.2.2 of the Safety Evaluation Report deals with the Auxiliary Control Room and Computer Room.
Paragraph 5.2.2.6 states that "The manual C02 system will be changed to automatic initiation by smoke detection."
Since this area is frequently manned by computer personnel, etc.,
Niagara Mohawk believes that an automatic initiating C02 system mav be unsafe.
We plan to install an automatic 6 percent HALON System, with hhe manual C02 system as a backup.
This system fulfills the requirements of fire protection while providing the degree of personnel safety required.
Your approval by January 31, 1980 is needed in order to complete installation in accordance with schedule contained in the Safety Evaluation Report.
