Nuclear Regulatory Commission 621 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 18406 SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION NOTIFICATION OP A POTENTIAL DEFICIENCY IN AMPHENOL CONN="CTORS AND CUTLER KVIMER E-30 SWITCHES (STATUS UPDATE)

ERs 100450/100508 PILE 840-4 PLA-409 Dear Mr. Griers Defects and conditions reported in PLA-399 of September ll, 1979 concerning Amphenol female connector pins and push button switches are still under review by our Nuclear Steam System Supplier, General Electric.

Because of the need to secure a technical assessment from G.E., the evaluation of the reportability of the deficient.conditions has not been completed.

Based upon G.E.'s assess-ment and following Bechtel Corporation's evaluation of the NSSS report on these

items, PPGL will conduct its evaluation and advise the Commission accordingly.

In the interim, additional inspections have revealed that, in addition to the defects on Cutler-Hammer push button switches outlined in PLA-399, the following problems have also been identified:

~ 1.

Some C-H push button switches stick when an attempt is made to depress the switch mechanism.

2.

Another failure mode was found with push button switch HS-271Bl. 'he switch auto and manual mode functions do not indicate proper operation.

When the manual mode is exercised, the manual switch legend floats at the same height as the auto mode, thereby giying the operator a false indica-tion of the switch position.

The Commission will be advised of PP&L's assessment of the reportability of all conditions by November ll, 1979.

Very truly yours,

~fw N
