Dear Mr. Vassallo:
This letter provides you with our intended schedule to meet the r equirements of 10 CFR 50.62.
This regulation addresses anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) events for light water cooled nuclear power plants.
Boiling water reactors must meet Sections 10 CFR 50.62.c(3), c(4),
and c(5).
Section 10 CFR 50.62.c(3) requires an alternate rod injection system with diversity between sensor output to the final actuation device.
The system must have redundant scram air header valves.
Niagara Mohawk will have an alternate rod injection system installed by the end of the 1988 refueling and maintenance outage.
This outage will be the second refueling outage for Nine Mile Point 1 after July 26, 1984.
Section 10 CFR 50.62.c(4) requires a standby liquid control system with the equivalent control capacity as defined in Generic Letter 85-03, dated Januar y 28, 1985.
Niagar a Mohawk is currently evaluating two alternatives to meet this requirement:
(a) use of enriched boron, or (b) modifying the standby liquid control system to increase the injection rate.
Niagara Mohawk will select and implement one of these, or another acceptable alternative, by the end of the 1988 refueling and maintenance outage.
As permitted by 10 CFR 50.62, the standby liquid control system will remain manually initiated.

I The Nine Mile Point Unit 1 reactor coolant recirculation pumps will trip automatically under conditions indicative of an anticipated transient without scram.
Therefore, further modifications are not considered necessary to fulfillthe requirements of 10 CFR 50.62c(5).
