Dear Mr. Denton:

We are writing to express our opposition .to the opening of the Shearon Harris nuclear plant.

We do not blame Carolina .Power and Light for having built the plant.

In the 1970's, we too were among those who believed that nuclear power was a reasonable alternative to fossil fuels. But the episode at Three Mile Island, reinforced by what we gather (through the fog of Soviet censorship) about the Chernobyl horror, has persuaded us that we were wrong.

Nuclear power, we now know, is unsafe.

We do not question the honorable intention, of .the staff at C. P. 6'L.

who assure us that nothing can go wrong. But we do question their ability to deliver on such a promise. We have all had too much experience with computer errors to trust technology to be absolutely foolproof. This would-,not matter, if as on our MasterCard bill ,

a foul-up now and then were acceptable. But, when radiation, is involved, foul-ups are not acceptable. The slightest error could let loose horrors whose full extent we can barely imagine.

We must stop while there is time. It would not be fair to leave C.P'.&L.

holding the bag, for making a mistake which so many of us shared.

Certainly we must help them recoup their losses. But we should not authorize them to keep on mak'ing this mistake, which could prove a terrible one indeed.

We are citizens, of North Carolina, and, hope to remain so for the rest of our, lives. We do not.wnat to live our lives next to a time bomb. We beg you to do whatever you can to stop that .bomb from being put in place.

Sincerel ,
