Dear Sir,
, We -have heard, from radio reports by Gunilla Luboff in North Carolina that a newly-built nuclear reactor, Shearon Harris near Raleigh N.C, is shortly to be brought into service.
We urge you to reconsider this decision.
The catastrophe in Chernobyl has closely demonstrated that nuclear energy is not a purely national matter.
An accident can have disastrous consequences for the whole world.
We have experience of this in Sweden, 1500 km from Chernobyl.
Farmers have been especially hard. hit. In some areas their dairy herds still must be kept indoors.
Those farmers who cannot obtain hay now in short supply and hence are forced to let their cows out to graze must pour the milk away. Problems now arise concerning how to dispose of polluted milk and. radioactive grass.
Large amounts of'esium have now also been found in wild anima1s.
Concern here is very great, especially for the future health of children.
We still know very little about the long-term consequences af radiation.
A referendum in Sweden has resulted, in the decision to abolish nuclear energy before 2010, but there is a strong move now to abolish it earlier.
No technology is 100 fo safe.
But it is insufficient that we here in Sweden abolish nuclear energy nuclear energy in all countries must be abolished.
We cannot poisin planet earth with more radioactivity especially as our decisions may have fatal consequences for future generations.
We see it as a major tragedy 'gf new nuclear reactors are put into operation.
We therefore urge you in the name of humanity to reconsider the decision to bring the reactor at Shearon Harris into operation.
