MAR 9 1983 APPLICANT:
Carolina Power
& Light Company FACILITY:
Shearon Harris, Units 1 and 2
SUBJECT:
GEOSCIENCES BRANCH MEETING HITH SHEARON'HARRIS A meeting was h."ld on February 28, 1983 between representatives of Shearon Harris and the NRC staff, Geosciences Branch at the NRC offices in Bethesda, tharyla,nd.
The list of attendees is enclosed as'."'Enclosure 1.
- The purpose of the meeting was for the applicant to provide information regarding the seismic monitoring instrumentation and the postulated Neuse fault.
In addition. the purpose was ',to exchange in.formation regarding the USGS re-evaluation of the implications of the Charleston earthquake.
~Summar The applicant made presentations to describe the status of the strong-motion and seismic monitoring instrumentation.
One strong-motion instrument was installed near the main dam in January and a second instrument will be installed near the;Plant. site,:.soon.
On the Neuse fault investigation, the presentation included the review of literature on the existance of the fault and alternative interpretations of the observations made so far.
The applicant indicated that they are convinced of the non-existence of the postulated fault, and that no'.~further, work is planned.
On the subject of the C6ai3:eston earthquake, the discussions resulted in an exchange of information on the technical efforts currently under way. to resolve the questions raised by the USGS position.
The applicant was informed that NRC staff will expect justification of the seismic criteria employed in the Shearon Harris design in the light of latest developments.
The'pp1icant was given a draft copy of the NRC staff, action plan and the January t]'983 USGS research report to the NRC.
The staff -informed the applicant that due to the lack of observed reservior-induced seismicity, LLNL will not estimate site specific spectra for shallow near<surface earthquakes at the OFFICEIN SURNAME/
