Dear Mr. Varga:
As requested in youx letter of April 21, 1980, Carolina Power Light Company (CP&L) has reviewed the use of masonry walls in Category I structures at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP).
As a result of that review, CP&L provides the following information:
1.
Masonry walls are used in Seismic Category I structures at the SHNPP; however, no Category I masonry walls have been used and no safety-related or Seismic Category I equipment or components are permitted to be supported from these walls.
The masonry walls in these structures are used for st:airway enclosures, elevator enclosures, shielding and knockout panels.
2.
The design of the walls is based on dead load conditions.
3.
CP&L is evaluating the'se walls against the criteria for damage of safety-related components by nonsafety items (Regulatory Guide 1.29).
CP&L believes that the above information should satisfy your concerns related to masonry walls at the SHNPP.
CP&L'ill inform you if the'valuation with respect to Regulatory Guide 1.29 reveals any exceptions to the'stablished criteria. If you have any questions on this subject, please contact our staff.
