Dear Mr. Scarola:

i On December 30, 1997, the'U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-06, "Degradation of Steam Generator Internals." The purpose of GL 97-06 was to obtain information that would enable the staff to verify that. the condition of steam generator internals complies with and conforms'to the current licensing bases.

By letter dated March 30, 1998, you provided the GL 97-06 response for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (HNP). Th'e staff's review of your response did not identify any new concerns with the condition ofthe HNP steam generator internals. The staff also did not identify any concerns with the inspection practices employed at HNP to detect degradation of steam generator internals.

The staff, therefore, concludes that your response to GL 97-06 provides reasonable assurance that the condition ofthe HNP steam generator internals is in compliance with the current licensing bases for HNP.

The detailed technical basis that supports the staffs determination for all facilities willbe published in a NUREG report. The expected publication date is December 1999. This completes the staffs effort on TAC No. MA0918. Ifyou have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (301) 415-1373.
