Auxiliary Dam - Complete This memorandum supplements my memo to you dated October 9, 1979, in which we approved the applicant's proposed change in moisture control fov the cove of the auxiliavy dam.

Above elevation 225 ft, the field moisture will be controlled within.the range of -1% to +3% of optimum moisture content.

Elsewhere, the previously specified range of -2% to 2" will be maintained.

lfe approve this change because:

1.

Core fillwhich is slightly wetter and therefore more plastic is commonly specified for the upper parts of the impemeable cores of vock fill dams because, during dynamic loading, lavge displacements and strains occur in the uppev parts of the dam so greater plasticity (and thus ductility) is considered desivable in order to minimize the potential for cracking of the core.

2.

The approved change in moisture content is not, consideved to be significant with respect to strength properties of the core material because laboratory test results show that the design strength of the core material will be achieved wlien the clay is compacted to the slightly higher moisture content vange.
