LWR-3; S. Miner, LPM REVIEW S ATUS:

Awaiting Information from Applicant Regarding Criteria for Support of Category I Pipes and Conduits In accordance with a Transfer of Lead Responsibility from IE to NRR for certain earthwork items (memo to D. Vassallo, hRR, from G. Reinmuth, IE, dated April 27, 1979) we have reviewed a submittal from M. McDuffie, CPIIL, to J.

O,'Pei lly, IE Region II, dated August 2, 1979, regarding the emergencv service water intake channel.

The applicant has decided to remove all existing fill along. the intake channel alignment and to replace fill in accordance with revised specifications as outlined in a letter from M. McDuffie, CPEL to H. Denton, NRR, dated September 6,

1979.

We find that these procedures are acceptable.

We have not yet been provided with the design bases or stability analyses of the channel

slopes, but understand that the applicant's engineers have designed the slopes.

It is our judgement that the channel details appear to be reasonable.

We recommend that continuation of the intake channel construction be permitted without cur having reviewed the design details, provided that the applicant submits these details in the FSAR and provided that the applicant agrees to correct any deficiencies which may be found during the FSAR review by NRR.

Olan D. Parr $ EP i 8 579 The remaining unresolved issue with respect to the transfer of lead responsibility is the criteria for fill and backfill supporting category I pipes and conduits other than those covered in my memo to you dated August 8, 1979 (Station N 230 to N 1300).

In my memo to you dated May 8, 1979 we requested additional information regarding category I pipes and conduits.

The applicant has not yet fully responded.

We request that the applicant be required to submit the necessary information in a timely. manner so as to allow us to complete our review within a reasonable review schedule.
