REQUEST FOR ADDITIONALINFORMATION(RAI) REGARDING GENERIC LETTER 97 SHEARON HARRIS (TAC NO.M99996)
Dear Mr. Robinson:
The staff issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-04, "Assurance of Sufficient Net Positive Suction Head for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment Heat Removal Pumps" on October 7, 1997. The GL requested that licensees provide information necessary to confirm the adequacy of the net positive suction head available for emergency core cooling and containment heat removal pumps.
By letter dated February 2, 1998, Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) submitted its 90-day response to GL 97-04. The staff has reviewed your response and has determined that additional information is necessary.
Please provide the information in the enclosed request within 30 days from the date of this letter.

What is the maximum sump temperature assumed in the net positive suction head (NPSH) analyses?

In response to question 3, it is stated that "until January 1997, HNP [Harris Nuclear Plant]
did not have a calculation for available (RHR) [residual heat removal] NPSH." However, in the next paragraph which discusses the 'Containment Recirculation Sump Evaluation Report'ated October 25 1985, it states that "CP8L provided the required RHR NPSH as 17' 3891 gpm, and the available RHR NPSH as 26.16'2.96'inimum containment water level above containment floor elevation 221'." How was the available NPSH for RHR provided in 1985 ifthe available NPSH for RHR calculation did not exist until 1997?
