Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 SH~~ON HAPttIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT DOCKET NO. 50-400/LICENSE NO. NPF-63 HIGH HEAD SAFETY INJECTION ALTERNATE MINI-FLOW SYSTEM MODIFICATION Gentlemen:

On October 28, 1992, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) provided responses to additional questions posed by the NRC's technical reviewers related to CP&L's modification to the High Head Safety Injection (HHSI) Alternate Mini-Flow (AMF)

System at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP).

The purpose of this letter is to provide a clarification to Item No.

2 in the October 28, 1992 response as a result of a subsequent telephone conversation between CP&L and the NRC on November 5,

1992.

The NRC had questioned (Item No. 2) how CP&L intends to periodically test the AMF System.

The safety-related portion of the AMF System is a part of the HHSI System.

As such, testing of the AMF System is covered by the requirements of the existing Technical Specifications for the HHSI System.

This testing is accomplished through Operations Surveillance Tests (OSTs) and Maintenance Surveillance Tests (MSTs).

Should you have any questions concerning this clarification, please contact Mr. R.

W. Pr nty at (919) 546-7318.

Yours very truly,
