Docket No. 50-400 License No.

NPF-63 Carolina Power and Light Company ATTN:

Mr. R. A. Watson Senior Vice President Nuclear Generation P.

O.

Box 1551

Raleigh, NC 27602 Gentlemen:

S

SUBJECT:

CONFIRMATORY MEASUREMENTS PROGRAM This is to inform you of an additional inspection element to the NRC Confirmatory Measurements Program.

During the Spring and Summer of 1992, as part of this program, liquid samples spiked with nonradiological species will be brought to your Shearon Harris facility by Regional NRC inspectors.

These samples should be analyzed at your facility in accordance with your routine procedures.

Detailed instructions will be provided.

The chemical species in this study will include:

ammonia, anions (fluoride, chloride, sulfate),
boron, hydrazine, lithium, metals (copper, chromium, iron, nickel),. silica,
sodium, and zinc.

The inspectors will review and evaluate the results of these analyses as part of their routine chemistry inspections and will provide this information to you in an inspection report.

This additional inspection element to the Confirmatory Measurement Program is not in response to any "perceived" weaknesses in this area, but rather in recognition of the growing importance of nonradiological water chemistry control in terms of material integrity and dose control.

We appreciate your cooperation on this matter.

If you have any questions regarding this

program, please contact Deborah Seymour by telephone at 404-331-2605.

Sincerely, cc:

(See page 2)
