ATTACHMENT TO SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT NPDES REPORT FOR MARCH 1991 Sewa e 'Leaka e to Storm Drains At approximately 0845 on March 10, -1991, the K Building Sewage collection tank pump was discovered to be de-energized during an electrical bus outage.

The inoperable pump caused the collection tank to overflow leaking about 50 gallons of raw sewage to the area catch basin. The catch basin already contained approximately 500 gallons of rain water. Upon high water level, the catcn basin pump automatically pumped the water to the storm drains. The spill was not detected in time to i'solate the catch basin since it was estimated

'efore that the power to the collection tank pump was off for about 5 hours the spill was detected. Immediate action was taken to secure the K Building potable water supply at 0855. A plant wide announcement was made to alert K Building personnel to refrain from using the rest rooms until power was restored. The storm drain runoff collection dike at the plant boundary was checked for dissolved oxygen.

This analysis showed an oxygen concentration of 3.2 ppm. A sample of a small nearby rain pool showed an oxygen concentration of 3.6 ppm, It was concluded that, the sewage would have only a minimum effect on the oxygen in the lake at the storm drain discharge point. Visual inspection of the storm drain discharge poi'nts at the plant boundary and Harris Lake showed no evidence of the sewage.

The plane is evaluating this incident and will implement corrective actions as required.
