Dear Mr. Upchurch:

PBaker DISTRIBUTION NRC PDR HDenton/JSniezek PPAS DMossburg (879072)

CERossi LRubenstein BBuckley DMiller I am pleased to respond to your letter of March 11, 1987, concerning the committee that is being established to inform the citizens in your region on the operation of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant.

You solicited suggestions as to the best way the committee can acquire current, accurate information about the operation of the Shearon Harris Plant.

Moreover, in addition to receiving future NRC evaluation reports in regard to the Shearon Harris Plant, you would also like to receive relevant reports from other agencies.

We would be pleased to brief the committee at their convenience on the NRC process for inspecting and reviewing the Shearon Harris plant and the extent to which we interact with other agencies.

In addition, we will put the committee on our mailing service list for all future correspondence on the Shearon Harris plant.

Currently, all correspondence between the Carolina Power 5 Light Company and the NRC on the Shearon Harris Plant is available at the Richard R. Harrison Library, 1313 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh, North Carolina 27610.

With regard to receiving information from other government

agencies, I would suggest that you contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as sources for reports, not specific to the plant, that may be of interest to you.

We will keep you abreast of issues that the staff finds to be pertinent.

I hope that these suggestions will be of help to you.

Sincerely, Oripinal Sight'd b9 H.R. Dt.nton Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 704170017 870410 PDR ADOCK 05000400 H
