1987 Chairman Lando W. Zech U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comm.

Washington, D.C.

20555 Dear Chairman Zech:

During,my recent campaign for Congress and in my first days of office, many of my constituents have expressed concern about the safety of the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant.

The Commission's recent decision to grant its staff the authority to issue a license for full power testing at Shearon Harris means that a new, critical stage in the licensing process has been reached.

I want to take this opportunity to impress upon the staff the gravity of their future decision about the license.

Their judgements will have an impact on the lives of millions of people.

Furthermore, if the staff does issue the license, I want to urge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and staff to carefully scrutinize all aspects of the full power testing.

I hope that we can work together to insure that Shearon Harris operates safely.
