BBuckley CBarth JGuillen I am pleased to respond to your letter to me (undated),

in which you described your experiences with the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant personnel and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Office on the night of June 28,

1986, when an emergency siren at the Shearon Harris Plant was activated.

You stated that you felt that your calls "to these people concerning an emergency siren near I.yourj house were not taken seriously and that [your] well-founded concerns were not responded to."

The NRC staff is currently in the process of reviewing the issue of the emergency activation system for Shearon Harris Unit 1 in a 10 CFR 2.206 petition brought forth by the Coalition for Alternatives to Shearon Harris (CASH) dated July 9, 1986.

One of the issues in this petition addresses the June 28, 1986 incident mentioned in your letter.

The petition also includes your affidavit attesting to the events that happened to you that night.

Therefore, due to the fact that our final review of this issue contained in CASH's 10 CFR 2.206 petition is not yet complete, the staff cannot respond at this time.

However, our response to the CASH's petition should be completed in the near future.

At that time, our response to the petition will be available for public inspection in the public document room for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant, located at the Wake County Public Library, 104 Fayettevi lie Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27601.

Sincerely,

/s/
