Dear Sir,
I am writing to tell you how concerned I am about Carolina Power and Light Company's plans for opening i
Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. I would hope hat with their dismal record of regulatory compliance and safety and the Brunswick station, plus the amount of public outcry over Shearon Harris, you might take a
closer look at what they are trying to do down here.
Please do not, allow them an exemption from the practice of the evacuation plan.
- Granted, since populations involved are not forced to participate, it's a pretty skimpy practice, but still it's something.
There is no reason they should be exempted from it.
- Second, please do not allow Shearon Harris or any other nuclear plan -- to narrow its area of evacuation to two miles.
- Instead, the area involved should be increased to 20, 25, or even 50 miles, especiallly in heavily populated areas.
It seems that I recall a petition filed 4 or 5 years ago by a Chapel Hill citizen, Phyllis Lotchin, which requested such an expansion (to 20 miles).
Shearon Harris must be held accountable.
They are making the money; they have to take the responsibility for their plants'afety.
I realize that you as a member of the NRC are committed to the safe and efficient use of nuclear energy.
I don', think it's unrealistic, therefore, to request that you hold companies to standards that. will make nuclear energy meet its promise.
Thank you,
