Dear ".is. Riley:

Thank you very much for your recent letter objecting to the con-struction of the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant. I can cer-tainly understand and. appreciate your concerns.

Generally speaking, the Congress has no direct authority over the approval or disanproval of construction licenses for nuclear power plants. That authority rests pith the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

In an effort to be as responsive as I possibly can, I have con-tacted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to let them know that you believe the Shearon Harris plant would pose a serious safety threat to you and others who live in the area.

Please continue to give me the benefit of your good advice and counsel.

Meantime, if there is ever a way in which we can be of assistance to you and our , please afford us that opportunity.
