Dear ter. Jones:

SUBJECT:

REPORTING PROCEDURES FOR GEOLOGICAL FEATURES BCC:

NSIC TIC ACRS (16)

In your October 17,.1978 to Harold R. Denton, you stated that it was your understanding that unquestionably ancient geological features need not be reported at the time of discovery but should be iden$ified and )iIscussed with

'he submission of geological maps.

You further stated that since you anticipate routinely discovering additional features such as these you plan to follow the following procedure:

(1)

Any feature or fault identified by the site geologist which can be readily associated with geologic structural features which are geologically ol'd (at least lIre-guarternary) will be documented in the interim report for each dam cutoff trench and(or the FSAR.

This type of feature is defined to 4'e "not capable" by 10 CFR 100. Appendix A.III.(g) and, therefore, is not required to be reported immediately.

(2)

Any feature or fault identified by the site geologist which cannot be readily associated with geologic structural features which are geologically old (at least Pre-guarternary) will result in the-initiation of a more detailed investigation.

If this investigation fails to resolve the age of a feature in a timely manner, CP8L will contact the NRC and provide as muoh detailed information concerning the feature as available at that time.

We have review'qd the proposed procedure and find it not acceptable because it does not allow for review by NRC personnel prior to cover~;n1I",'of the exposure feature.

All features should be reported to NRC in a timely manner to allow for. proper review even if the feature is determilned by CP8L to be Vsj SX>02C<

orncaoe.

The NRC review may include a site visit.

No gelogic feature should be permanently covered until a report discussing that feature or a specific ar'ea of features has been submitted and reviewed by us and a release to allow permanent covering of exposures is provided by us.

This procedure will allow for a proper review of all relevant features by the NRC.

If you have any questi'ons regarding this matter please contact us.
