Dear Mr. Galanek:

This refers to your letter dated October 25, 2017 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession Number ML17300A001), which submitted a License Amendment Request (LAR) to reinstate the use of solid natural uranium rods to be used for experimentation in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Graphite Exponential Pile, located within the restricted area of the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory. On February 24, 2016, in your license renewal application (ADAMS ML16081A295), which was approved on December 14, 2017 (ADAMS ML17086A514), you had requested to continue a storage only designation of this material. The intent of the request is to enable the use of this material as a part of the nuclear engineering curriculum as described in your submittal.

The LAR is approved and documented under condition License Condition (LC) 10, approving the use of licensed materials as described in your application dated October 25, 2017.

Additionally, on July 20, 2017 (ADAMS ML17300A098), your Agreement State License with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was amended to accept depleted uranium (DU) that has been listed on your Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) License, SNM-986. Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Section 40.21, General License to Receive Title to Source or Byproduct Material, provided relief from the requirement for a specific license for DU. License condition 6.I. has been deleted. All other LCs remain the same.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs)

Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this letter and enclosures 1 and 2 will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the NRCs ADAMS. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).
