Dear Senator Graham:
I am writing to you to request your support in forcing a shutdown of the Turkey Point nuclear power plant because of safety violations.
I have been informed that an Atomic Safety Licensing hearing is scheduled for January 10, 1989.
It is my understanding that in 1984 FPL was cited for poor performance at Turkey Point; again in 1986; in 1987 there was allegedly an incident involving unauthorized personnel being allowed to operate the control valves of a live reactor operating at fuff power; in 1988 there was a leak of 3300 gallons of radioactive water; and in 1989 FPL accrued penalties in the amount of approximately 1.5 million dollars for violations of federal safety regufations.
This clearly indicates a gross breach of responsibility on the parts of FPL, NRC, and our local, state and federal representatives.
I don't think I need to remind you of the recent Chernoble disaster.
I am certain that Miami would not like to enjoy the same reputation.
lt has also been brought to my attention that the NRC used to evafuate 12 functional areas at the Turkey Point plant and now only evaluate 7 functional areas.
This is an additional poiiit of Concern; I think you would want to agree that with regard to something as important-as potential nuclear disaster we would want to do everything humanly possible to assure 100% reliability and safety.
If we can not effect the shutdown of Turkey Point, certainly FPL should be forced to replace the reactor vessels which have been damaged by radiation over the years.
I understand that a shutdown of Turkey Point would probably increase our monthly power bill, however, where life and death are concerned I think a few dollars more would be preferable.
