Dear Dr. Uhrig:

SUBJECT:

MASONRY MALL DESIGN - TURKEY POINT PLANT, UNITS 3 AND 4 A meeting was held in Bethesda, Ihryland on January 20. 1983, to discuss the use of energy balance technique and arching action for masonry wall qualification.

The NRC staff indicated that the validity of the two analysis techniques should be substantiated by appropriate masonry testing.

Based on the technical information presented during and subsequent to the meeting, we have concluded that additional testing in the specific cases for each facility is not warranted at this time.

However, we further indicated that facilities would be selected for plant-specific reviews wherein each specific application of.these techniques would be reviewed in detail.

The staff has selected Turkey Point Plant Units 3 and 4 as one of the facilities for a plant-specific review due to your extensive use of both the analytical techniques for masonry wall design qualification at the Turkey Point Plant.

We request that a site visit and. detailed audit of the calculations and analysis used for masonry wall qualification be arranged with the NRC Project. Manager for Turkey Point Plant.

We request that the-arrangements.

and details be made by telephone and the site visit be at the earliest time agreeable to both our staffs.
