Dear Mr. Denton:
This letter is in response to Mr. D.G. Eisenhut's letter of April 20, 1981 on the subject of "Thermal Shock to Reactor Pressure Vessels (Generic Letter 81-19)".
The Westinghouse Owners'roup, of which Indiana 5 Michigan Electric Company is a member, has underway an evaluation program to address the concern of thermal shock to reactor pressure vessels as identified in the above-referenced letter.
The description of the program and the schedule are contained in letter No.
OG-58 dated May 14, 1981 from Mr. R.
W. Jurgensen, Chairman of the Westinghouse Owners'roup to Mr. D.G. Eisenhut, Director, Division of Licensing, NRC.
As described in the May 14, 1981 letter, the Donald C.
Cook Nuclear Plant has been shown to be able to safely sustain severe thermal shock transients, including repressurization, to beyond
- January, 1983 at a minimum.
Specifically, the Westinghouse Owners'roup program expected to be completed in December, 1981 will identify, for all operating plants as identified in the May 14 report, whether future additional plant specific analyses and/or remedial actions may be required, and will provide the time in plant life when these additional actions may be needed.
