ENCLOSURE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INDIANA MICHIGAN POMER COMPANY COOK UNIT I LICENSEE

RESPONSE

TO BULLETIN 88-02 By letter dated January 27, 1990, Indiana Michigan Power Company provided an updated response to NRC Bulletin 88-02, "Rapidly Propagating Fatigue Cracks ir.

Steam Generator Tubes".

The licensee stated in this letter that a detailed evaluation of field eddy current data has led them to conclude that there is no indication of service-induced denting at the upper support plates of the Cook Unit I steam generators.

(Bulletin 88-02 stated that "denting". should be considered to include evidence of upper support plate corrosion and the presence of magnetite in the tube-to-support plate crevices, regardless of whether there is detectable distortion of the tubes.)

Accordingly, the licensee concludes that actions requested under item C of the bulletin are not app 1 icab le to Coo k Unit l.

The staff has reviewed the subject submittal and requests the following additional information so that it may complete its review of the bulletin issue for Cook Unit l.

1.

Describe the data analysis guidelines and criteria for the detection of support plate corrosion and the presence of magnetite in "the support plate crevices.

2.

Describe the bases for these guidelines and criteria, including a description of mockups and calibration standards employed.

3.

Describe how the data analysts comprehension of the data analysis guidelines and criteria was assured.

4.

Pages I and 2 of the attachment to the licensee's January 29, 1990 letter refers to "45 dents" or "signal anomalies previously reported as dents" which were subsequently "determined to be insignificant".

Please provide a copy of the field eddy current data for a.representative sample of these signal anomalies.
