This letter confirms the conversation on April 5, 1988, between Mr. A. Blind of your staff and Mr. B. Burgess of this office, related to the potential tampering event involving foreign material found in the Unit I turbine driven Auxiliary Feedwater pump bearing housing at the D.

Cook Nuclear Plant.

With regard to the matters discussed, we understand that you will complete the following actions:

1.

Brief plant operators and plant security personnel with regard to the above event to provide a heightened state of awareness to the presence of foreign material in undesired places and/or in equipment.

2.

Inspect each Auxiliary Feedwater (AFW) pump bearing for the presence of foreign material.

3.

Visually inspect accessible portions of other safety related motors/pumps for the presence of foreign material.

4.

Analyze the bearing oil in the Unit I turbine driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump outboard bearing for evidence of contaminents.

5.

Within 30 days, provide to Region III an update on the results of the above inspections and the analysis of the Unit I turbine driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump outboard bearing oil to be followed by a letter on these same subjects.

Should any further instances of potential tampering be found, we understand that you will immediately notify us.

In addition, any evidence found of tampering during your inspection should be preserved for NRC review.
