Dear Mr. Denton:
This letter responds to requests from members of your staff concerning the matter of containment purging during normal operation.
Specifically, a potential concern was identified during the purge system review dealing with the control room isolation function and its override circuitry.
Also, we were requested to provide a
commitment to upgrade the status of the containment radiation monitors in relation to the automatic initiation of Containment Ventilation Isolation.
With regard to the control room isolation concern, the circuitry under discussion is a component level reset that even if actuated will not prevent initiation of control room isolation by a safety injection signal (i.e., this reset action does not block the control room isolation function at the system level).
Use of the reset feature does not affect the position of the control room duct dampers.
The operator reopens the dampers by operating the control switch after the initiating closure trip signal has been reset.
With regard to the containment radiation monitors and as a result of our review of the requirements of NUREG-0578, we have already made plans to upgrade the containment area monitor which initiates Contain-ment Ventilation Isolation to safety grade/Class lE status.
The up-graded radiation monitoring channels inside containment will be go39 5
