20555 Attn:

E. Murley August ll, 1989
Dear Mr. Murley:
The purpose of this letter is to clarify nomenclature in regard to your Safety Evaluation Report (SER) issued on April 14, 1989 on our Anticipated Transients Without Scram (ATWS) Mitigating System Actuation Circuitry (AMSAC) design.
The difference between our design submittals (letters dated November 7,
- 1986, June 25,
- 1987, October 28,
- 1987, December 18, 1987 and March 31, 1988) and the SER are minor but could cause interpretative questions in the future.
We have discussed this matter with your staff and are providing the following information at their request.
Section 3.0, DISCUSSION AND EVALUATION, Sub-paragraphs 5 6 6
~B ~asses (Page 6):
Whenever AMSAC is bypassed, the status indicator light will come on in the control room.
This is not an annunciator as implied in the last sentence in Section 5, "The continuous indication of the AMSAC bypass will be displayed by an AHSAC trouble alarm window that will be located in the main control room."
The same comment applies when AMSAC is automatically armed above 40%;
a status indicator light will indicate this, not an annunciator as implied by the sentence in Section 6
that states "The armed condition will be continuously indicated by a control room annunciator."
We do have two annunciator drops, but these are to indicate AMSAC Initiated and Control Bus Abnormal.

Dr. T.
E. Murley AEP:NRC:0838AG In light of the above, we respectfully request an amended SER to
-more accurately reflect the control room AMSAC displays.
This document has been prepared following Corporate procedures that incorporate a reasonable set of controls to ensure its accuracy and completeness prior to signature by the undersigned.
