A. B. Davis

Dear Mr. Davis:

I This letter is to inform you that on May 28, 1988, Fire Door 324 for the Unit 2 Reactor Cable Tunnels was inoperable in excess of seven days as specified in Technical Specification 3.7.10 Action a.

On May 21, 1988, during routine surveillance of Plant Technical Specification related fire doors, Fire Door 324 was declared inoperable due to the fact that the gap between the bottom of the door and the door sill exceeded the allowable 3/8" measurement by between 1/16" and 1/8".

Repairs were scheduled to return Fire Door 324 to operable status within the seven days as required by Technical Specifications.

However, during this time period, fuel was being unloaded from the Unit 2 Reactor Core and transferred to the Spent Fuel Pit.

Due to the fact that the fuel transfer canal runs through a portion of the Reactor Cable Tunnel, the Plant Radiation Protection Department had suspended all work in the Reactor Cable Tunnels for ALARA concerns.

As soon as fuel movement was complete the required repairs were completed on Fire Door 324 and it was returned to operable status on May 31, 1988.

During this time period, a roving fire watch patrol as required by Technical Specification 3.7.10 Action a, was established and maintained.

Due to the very slight increase in the gap between the door and door sill, it is extremely unlikely that fire would have passed through this gap and spread to the adjacent fire zone.

It is also unlikely that this slight increase in the gap between the door and the door sill would have had an 8807060142 880621 S
