20555 Attention: A. B. Davis In accordance with Technical Specification (T/S) 3.3.3.3.b this special report is being submitted to inform you that, seismic monitoring instruments have been inoperable for more than 30 days.
On June 10, 1987, the seismic monitoring system triggered as a result of a seismic event that occurred in Lawerenceville, Illinois.
In accordance with T/S 4.3.3.3.2, a special report was submitted to your office describing the measured activity and effects on the plant.
T/S 4.3.3.3.2 also requires 'that each of the seismic monitoring instruments, activated during a seismic event, be restored to operable status and the applicable channel calibrations performed.
A channel calibration was performed on Peak Recording Accelerograph (PRA) detectors, new tapes were installed and the functional test procedure performed to declare them operable.
New tapes were also installed in the Strong Motion Triaxial Accelerograph (SMA) detectors at which time they were returned to a functional -con-figuration, while remaining technically inoperable pending the completion of the T/S required channel calibration.
The calibra-tion of the SMA detectors was not performed due to the inaccessi-bility of the Reactor Pit Detector and the unavailability of the vendor who'performs the calibration.

On June 26,
- 1987, D. C.
Cook Unit 1 was shut down for refueling.
After containment
- cleanup, the calibration of the reactor pit SMA detector was completed.
The test procedure was performed and the detector was declared operable on July 11, 1987.
The remaining T/S detectors are scheduled to be calibrated the week of July 27, 1987.
Sincerely, L<+/
