Gentlemen:

Thank you for your letter dated

May 15, 1985, requesting

recision of

your commitment,

as contained in LER 50-316/78-037,

to run one emergency

diesel

generator while the other diesel

generator

is being

removed from an

operating status.

The Region III staff has

reviewed Revision

1 to LER 50-316/78-037.

We concur

that the corrective actions

taken to preclude inadvertently

removing both

diesel

generators

from service simultaneously

are adequate.

We also agree

that the number of fast starts

should

be minimized.

We note that rescinding

the commitment only affects

when the "operable"

diesel

generator will be run and does not impact on the technical specifica-

tion requirement

to verify the operability of the "operable" diesel

generator,

nor does it affect your procedures

for tagging

and independent verification

thereof.

Based

on the above, your proposal

recision is approved effective

immediately.

Should you have any additional questions

please call me.

Sincerely,

RIII
