Mr. Paul D. 7.ugger Executive Secretary Michigan IVater Resources Commission Stevens T. Mason Building Box 30026 Lansing, Michigan 48909 Re: Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. Ml 0005827 Boiler Blowdown

Dear Mr. Zugger:

A back-up heating boiler which had not been in use for approximately three years was started up for test purposes. A blowdown sample taken February 24, 19&4, was analyzed and found to have an iron concentration of 1.37 PPM.

On March 13, 1984, after minor repairs had been made, the boiler was again started. A blowdown sample was analyzed and found to contain 6.7 PPM iron.

ln both instances, the iron levels probably result from such infrequent use and occasional start-up.

An NPDES modification which exempts the plant heating boilers from iron and copper limits was approved at a meeting of the Michigan Water Resources Commission on March 21, 1'979, although the staff has never formally modified the permit to reflect this administrative action.
