F~E CM MAR 6 1984 Docket No. 50-315 Docket No. 50-316 American Electric Power Service Corporation Indiana and Michigan Electric Company ATTN:

Mr. John E. Dolan Vice Chairman Engineering and Construction 1 Riverside Plaza

Columbus, OH 43216 Gentlemen:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is conducting a regional workshop on fire protection safe shutdown requirements of 10 CFR 50, Appendix R on March 23, 1984, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

and ending at 4:00 p.m.

The workshop will be held at the Ramada O'Hare Inn, 6600 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Illinois, 60018 (312-827-5131).

All Region III licensee's are invited to attend.

The purpose of this workshop is to cover those subjects described in IE Information Notice 84-09 and provide additional guidance to licensee's in conducting safe shutdown analyses and/or making modifications to implement the requirements of 10 CFR 50, Appendix R.

Lessons learned from NRC inspections of fire protection safe shutdown requirements resulting in significant items of noncompliance at a number of reactor facilities will be discussed.

Part of the workshop will be devoted to answering any questions or concerns from licensee staffs.

The workshop will be open to the public.

However, due to time constraints, participation will be limited to NRC and licensee staff only.

The proposed agenda is enclosed for your review. It is expected that all Region III licensee's will review the subject matter for applicability to their activities and respond accordingly.
