Columbus, Ohio 43216 By letter dated September 2, 1983, Indiana and Hichigan Electric Company requested approval to use the later editions of the ASHE Section XI Code for the test temperature requirement for hydrostatic tests of Class 1 and 2 austenitic stainless steel piping and components for the D. C. Cook Nuclear Plant, Unit Nos.

1 and 2.

As noted in the IHEC letter, it is correct that the latter editions of the Code recognized the differences between ferritic and austenitic stainless steels and does allow austenitic stainless steels to be tested without the test temperature requirement.

We have reviewed the proposal made by IHEC to the September letter, i.e.,

the system hydrostatic test temperature at the Donald C.

Cook Nuclear Plant for system comprised entirely of austenitic stainless steel will be ambient temperature, but no lower than 50'F.

We find this proposal acceptable, therefore, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(i), the IHEC is granted exception~; for the test requirement as proposed.
