Hegner Reactor Systems Branch Complete The reference letter is Indiana and Michigan Electr ic Company's response to TMI Action Item II.K.3.25 for the Cook Nuclear Power Stations.
This Action Item requires licensees to demonstrate that the integrity of their reactor coolant pump (RCP) seals is maintained (e.g., adequately cooled) during a loss of offsite power event.
The applicant's response stated that the reactor coolant pump seals are cooled by two independent methods:
(1) The chemical and volume control system, and (2) The component cooling water system.
During a loss of offsite power event, the RCP motor is de-energized and both cooling systems to the seals are terminated.
However, the diesel generators are automatically initiated and within seconds, both the component cooling water and seal injection flow (part of the CVCS) are auto-matically and sequentially loaded onto the diese'Is.
Either of these cooling supplies is adequate to provide seal cooling and prevent seal fai,lure during a loss of offsite power event.
We find the licensee's submittal acceptable and request that you close-out Action Plan Item II.K.3.25 for D.C. Cook Units 1 and 2.
