Isolation Zone

Security Plan states in paragraph

3.1.2,

"an area

immediately

adjacent

to the fence shall be kept clear of objects

and materials

that could offer concealment

to an individual.

This area shall

serve

as an isolation zone

and be a minimum width of 20 feet

on each side of the fence."

On April 19,

1979 at about

1630 hours0.0189 days <br />0.453 hours <br />0.0027 weeks <br />6.20215e-4 months <br /> the inspector

observed

eight empty radioactive ~aste

casks,(5

feet by 6 or 8 foot

cylinders) near the fence

on the east

edge of the facility.

Measurements

by the inspector

(pacing)

showed

the edge of the

casks

were

14 to 16 feet from the fence.

The item was brought

to the attention of the duty Shift Security Supervisor

who then

initiated compensatory

measures until the casks

could be re-

moved.

3.

Exit Interview

The inspector discussed

the item of apparent

noncompliance

with the licensee

on April 20,

1979.

The licensee

stated

actions

were being taken to prevent this from happening

again.

Including marking the area with posts

and requiring that super-

visory personnel periodically conduct audits of the guard's

ability to detect violations of the isolation zone.
