During our routine inspection of St. Lucie Unit 2 on September
6-9,
1983,
we
identified an apparent
deviation from your commitments to the Commission involv-
ing the automatic sprinkler systems
installed within the Unit 2 auxiliary build-
ing.
The principal concern
was the obstructions
to the ceiling level sprinkler
systems.
This is identified as Deviation 389/83-57-01.
Your letters of November 23,
1983 and March 14, 1984, did not concur with this
finding.
Therefore,
as noted
by our letter to you of April 5,
1984,
we forwarded
your response
to our Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation for an evaluation.

NRC's evaluation indicates that the sprinkler systems
located in plant fire areas
containing redundant
safe
shutdown divisions should provide sufficient protection
to assure
that one shutdown division would remain free from damage
in the event
of fire.
To accomplish this objective requires
portions of the existing systems
at St. Lucie 2 to be modified by the installation of additional sprinkler heads,
relocation of existing heads
beneath
obstructions
or removal of the obstructions.
For fire areas
where only one shutdown train exists,
the present configuration is
considered
acceptable.
A copy of this evaluation is enclosed for your informa-
tion.
Therefore,
we would appreciate
your response
to us within 30 days
from your
receipt of this letter
as to the corrective actions which will be taken to
correct this deviation
and the date your corrective actions will be completed.
Should you have any questions
concerning this letter,
we will be glad to discuss
them with you.
