S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page Two Seat:us:
The Holophane MPS units and fluorescent fixtures were installed in all three units by August 31, 1990.
Post modification testing was successfully completed in PVNGS Units 1 and 3.
During performance of testing in Unit 2 it was noted that the fluorescent fixtures at the 140'evel of the Main Steam Support Structure (MSSS) were cycling on and off during the discharge t:est of their associat:
d MPS.
This was not observed in either Unit 1 or Unit 3 during testing.
A decision was made not to complete the final turnover of the modification, in any of the three Units, until the cause of the problem in Unit 2 was clearly understood and any necessary corrective measures taken.
The cause of the problem in Unit 2 has been determined to be localized high temperatures causing the ballast in'the fluorescent fixture eo reach a temperature where the automatic cutout in the ballast is actuated.
The solution to the problem is to move the ballasts to a lower temperature environment.
The new configuration will be tested prior eo installation in any of the three PVNGS Units and will be installed firse in Unit 2.
The modification is scheduled eo be completed in all three units by December 15, 1990.
All three Units have been notified of this poeeneial problem and are prepared to take the necessary compensatory actions.
Corrective Action'olophane MPS's will be upgraded to larger capacity units.
Status:
This modification was completed ahead of schedule in all three PVNGS Units.
Corrective Action'he low voltage disconnect relay set point will be lowered on all Exide Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPSs).
Status:
This modification was completed on schedule in all three PVNGS Units.
