Surveillance of Grout Seals and Spare Conduit Threaded Plugs Fire-Rated Assemblies File:
89-056-026 This letter forwards inEormation on the Surveillance of grout seals and spare conduit threaded plugs contained in fire rated assemblies as discussed with Dennis Kubicki on October 6,
1989 and October 19, 1989.
We are clariEying, the fire-rated assembly and penetration sealing program to assure long-term compliance with surveillance testing and configuration control.
We intend to perform the inspection of penetrations sealed by grout as a part of the fire barrier inspection.
The surveillance of the exposed surfaces of each fire-rated assembly, including penetrations sealed by grout, will be conducted on an 18-month frequency in accordance with the fire protection program described in the PVNGS UFSAR. If a grout seal is associated with a conduit pe'netration, any required internal conduit seals will be surveilled as a penc ration type (i.e., 10'ample basis).
We base our approach with the use of grout to the similarity of grout seal characteristics to concrete masonry.
APS intends to surveil spare conduit sleeves which are sealed with threaded plugs as a part of the Eire barrier assembly inspection.
Sufficient detail will be included in the surveillance procedure to assure 100% of the spare conduits will be surveilled.
We base this approach on the fact that threaded conduit plugs do not degrade from environmental affects or are subject to mechanical damage as other sealing devices such as silicone foam.
Any missing or degraded plugs would be recognized in the fire barrier assembly inspection.
