The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by the Region V staff on this date.

SUBJECT:
FITNESS FOR DUTY - REACTOR OPERATOR TESTS POSITIVE ON ROUTINE URINALYSIS As a part of the licensee's routine drug screening
- program, a urinalysis test was conducted on April 22,.1989 for a licensed reactor operator assigned to Unit - 1.
The security organization was notified the same day that the initial onsite screening results were positive for cocaine at which time the individual's protected area access authorization was suspended pending the results of offsite laboratory confirmation.
On April 27, 1989, the offsite laboratory confirmed the initial results.
The individual has been placed on disciplinary suspension and will be offered the opportunity to participate in the licensee's employee assistance program.
Following the suspension, the individual will be r etested and if the results are negative, will be reinstated but will remain subject to the licensee's random testing follow-up program which will contjnue for at least a year.
Palo Verde Unit -
1 is at cold shutdown in"a 'refueling outage that begari on March 5, 1989.
No media interest has ensued although the licensee is prepared to respond to inquiries.
, The Region was notified of the positive test at 3:10 PM (PDT), April 27, 1989.
