NRC Inspection of Palo Verde Units 1, 2
and 3 (50-528, 529, 530/88-06)
Dear Sir:
Results of the unannounced inspection conducted by Hr. C.
Ramsey, of your
- staff, on February 1 through February 5,
- 1988, documented in the referenced letter, identified NRC Unresolved Item 528/88-06-01.
Unresolved Item 528/88-06-01 pertains to functional discharge testing of the largest capacity Pre-Action Fire Suppression System installed in Unit 1.
ANPP stated that this testing would be scheduled and performed at a later date and the results documented for Region V to review.
Hr. Ramsey's
- concern, which led to the request for the functional discharge
- testing, was that the increased (greater than manufacturer recommendation) supervisory air pressure in the system may delay the time associated with water reaching the most remote sprinkler head following activation of the pre-action valve.
ANPP has revised the "Fire Protection Equipment Testing and Haintenance for the Power Block" procedure to maintain the supervisory air pressure setting at 15-25 psig as recommended by the manufacturer.
ANPP believes this action resolves Hr. Ramsey's concern and therefore will not be performing the requested functional discharge testing of the Pre-Action Fire Suppression System.
If you should have any questions regarding this information contact Hr.
Timothy Shriver of my staff at (602) 393-2521.
Very truly yours, 3808110052 880726 PDR ADOCK 05000528 Q
