REACTOR OPERATOR TESTS ON ROUTINE URINALYSIS (UPDATE)
Emergency Classification Notification of Unusual Event Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable POSITIVE Preliminary Notification No. PNS-V-88-02 issued May 24, 1988, documented the licensee's report of an NRC-licensed reactor operator who tested positive for marijuana in the course of a routine annual urinalysis.
The operator had admitted to using marijuana and was given five days leave without pay.
Following the five-day suspension, the individual was retested on May 25, 1988.
This test showed a decreased level of marijuana residue in the body and an abstinence of further marijuana use.
A further test, conducted on May 31, 1988 was negative.
In accordance with the licensee's established
- program, the individual has been placed in a drug education program which will run for three weeks during which time unescorted access to the protected area continues to be denied.
Palo Verde Unit - 2 is at cold shutdown in a refueling/maintenance outage that began on February 20, 1988 and is scheduled to be completed in late June.
The licensee is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
