Dear Mr. Knighton:

This will confirm an April 8, 1985 telephone call from Mr. D. K. Neal of my staff to Mr. D. J. Kubicki, NRC Fire Protection Reviewer.

The purpose of the telephone call and this letter is to clarify that the 8-hour emergency lights are installed in all areas needed for operation of safe shutdown equipment and in access and egress routes thereto.

Emergency lighting for personnel egress from other plant areas is provided by 1~2-hour battery units referenced in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.

Mr. Kubicki indicated that this position is consistent with SER Supplement No.

6 which states that "the applicant committed to provide 8-hour battery powered emergency lighting units in all areas needed for operation of safe shutdown equipment".

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. W. F. Quinn of my staff.

Very truly yours, zan-~/~i~
