Subject:
PVNGS FSAR Update Radiation Protection Design Features Dear Mr.
Knighton.'s a result of discussion with your staff regarding the referenced
- letter, additional information is being provided to explain and )ustify the deletion of design criteria to slope spent resin lines where practical.
As described in FSAR Section 11.4, spent resins are transferred by
- pumped, closed
- circuit, sluicing process:
Spent resins are not transferred by gravity.
The closed loop transfer uses Johnson screens and strainers to accumulate resins in the receiving tank.
The resin free water is then used to continue the sluicing operation.
This process is used to purge the resin lines.
- Thus, the slope of the line has little if any effect upon the ability of the system to purge resins to the receiving tank.
Since resin transfer is an infrequent
- process, the lines were sloped to facilitate drainage without requiring the use of tee fittings for low point drains.
Such tees could con-stitute a resin trap.
For those horizontal lines that were not sloped, it was either impractical to slope them due to design or construction interferences, or they were able to be drained without the use of a tee fitting (e.g.,
the line routing included a vertical drop).
- Thus, the description in the FSAR is being deleted to avoid future confusion over the necessity and practicality of sloping these lines.
