NRC Inspection Report 50-528/84-10, dated April 10, 1984 In response to concerns expressed during the referenced inspection concerning the subject item, an overall plan has been developed by the project.

The plan consists of an evaluation of installed components and a design review of Cathodic Protection to assure adequate coverage of current installations.

A construction schedule has also been developed to accomplish any necessary work.

The construction schedule will not be implemented, except for drilling of anode beds, until completion and evaluation of the above tasks.

The results of the evaluations,

reviews, and inspections will be available for your review at the PVNGS site at the conclusion of the specified actions.

Responses to specific questions raised during various other inspections are contained in the attachment.

ATTACHMENT In response to some specific questions raised during various inspections the following information is provided:

1.

Safety-related pi in :

No stainless steel piping is in direct contact with the soil.

Safety-related piping has been protected since installation.

Carbon steel piping is coated and wrapped.

Flanged joints are checked for electrical continuity, and are inspected for coating.

2.

Fire Loo System:

Inspection plan AO-IR&24, Revision 0 has been developed.

Items which will be inspected include flange and valve bonnet nuts and bolts and valve and hydrant bodies for minimum wall violations.

This inspection is scheduled to be accomplished by July 27, 1984.

Hydrant valve bodies, as well as flanged connections, will be coated prior to backfill for those items excavated for any reason.

3.

Ground Grid Loo A new ground grid,1oop has been installed; Grid laterals will be inspected for corrosion attack.

This inspection will also be accomplished under AO-IR-024, Revision 0 and is scheduled for completion by July 27, 1984.

4.

Safety related tanks and structures:

The buried diesel fuel oil tanks have thirty miles external coating.

Sacrificial anodes were installed to protect these tanks prior to the energization of the cathodic protection system.

Other safety-related tanks located at grade and in direct contact with the soil have partial cathodic protection from the existing system.

No external corrosion has been identified to date for any grade level tank.
