Dear Ms. Kerrigan:

This letter provides a clarification to the PVNGS Safety Evaluation Report (SFR) regarding diesel storage tank corrosion protection.

Section 9.5.4.2 of the SFR states:

"Periodic checks of the fuel oil quality will only determine water entrained in the fuel, not water that may accumulate at the bottom of the tank from rainfall and periodic changes in the atmospheric humidity."

As shown in FSAR figure 9.5-7, the design of the diesel fuel oil storage tanks includes a water collection sump and a water drain pipe to draw off water settled in the sump (a portable pump will be used).

Therefore, any water accumulated in the tanks is pumped out using the drain connection.

As stated previously, accumulated condensate is removed from the tanks on a quarterly basis.

We believe that this clarification and our previous responses to FSAR questions 9A.6 (430.9),

9A.7 (430.10) and 9A.9 (430.12) resolves your concern and that the PVNGS design provides adequate protection from postulated corrosion products.
