Attachment to ANPP-17433' JMA/WFg In January 1981, the District completed clearing a 1000 foot strip from 91st Avenue to 123rd Avenue.

The clearing was done in conjunction with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Maricopa Audubon Society.

This cooperative effort resulted in the clearing of most of the salt cedars from'he'strip while preserving local comaunities of cottonwoods and willows.

During 1980, the District had cleared about six miles of salt cedars from Gillespie Dam upstream in a strip 300'ide.

In December of 1980, an additional 30 acres of vegetation was cleared from immediately above Gillespie.

The intervening strip of approximately 25 miles is presently undergoing an environmental assessment by both federal and state wildlife agencies.

This portion of the Gila River is within the jurisdiction of the BLM and, therefore, the studies wi 11 result in an Environmental Impact Statement, the first draft of which is due to be released'in March.

The EIS will address the various mitigation methods that may be required to proceed with channel clearing in that reach of the riverbed.
